Dec 22 Chiang Saen con't 4

Then we drove back towards the hotel, only along the way we stopped by the river. This was another of the tour guide's "discovery" adventures. He said that Thai people like to relax at various cafes by the river and enjoy conversation and refreshment -- so we all did that. It really was very picturesque.
We sat at these really low tables (designed for sitting on the floor) and watched the sunset over Burma. It was Laos across the river to the east and Burma to the west. There were several Chinese fishing boats on the river too (the Mekhong) because it goes on up to China between Laos and Burma and I guess all three countries sail along it.
Then the tour guide bought a couple of cool mini-hot air balloon things. He said they use them for Loy Krathong -- sort of an air born version of the boats that float down the river. You light a thing at the bottom and as it burns it heats the air in a really thin paper balloon and it sails away. They were pretty.
